To begin Unit X, we participated in a work-in-progress show, which was an exciting opportunity to showcase our developing practices. The curation team organized the event, and we were asked to submit a sample piece that best represented our work, allowing us to reflect on how to present ourselves as makers. Alongside the show, a zine was created to accompany the exhibition, featuring insights and highlights from the participating artists. This added an extra layer of exposure and creativity to the experience. I am particularly excited about this opportunity, as it not only helps us put our names out into the professional world but also builds confidence and fosters a deeper understanding of how to navigate and engage within creative industries.

When at great northern, I collected business cards of the people of interest to me. Personally I would've liked to have a conversation with the artists however, whenever I had time to look around it turned out to unfortunately be rush hour. See below for a collation of the business cards collected:

Lauren Plant:
Iona Ceramics:
I took particular interest in these two artists because they each embody distinct qualities that I aspire to incorporate into my own practice. Lauren Plant’s work captures a sense of elegance and refinement, with a meticulous aesthetic that inspires me to strive for a higher level of precision  in my craft. In contrast, Iona’s pieces are defined by their thick, authentic style, giving a raw and tactile quality that feels grounded and organic. While both artists are exquisite in their own right, I am particularly drawn to the contrast between their approaches. This juxtaposition has made me reflect on how I can aim for a balanced middle ground, merging the graceful refinement of Lauren Plant’s work with the authentic essence of Iona’s. By finding harmony between these two styles, I hope to create work that is both elegant and richly expressive, capturing the best of both worlds while remaining true to my artistic vision.
